Congressman Baron P. Hill
Senior Advisor

Former Representative Baron P. Hill (D-IN) represented Southern Indiana in the U.S. House of Representatives for three terms. During that time, he served on three committees: Agriculture, Joint Economic, and Armed Services. While on the Armed Services Committee, Representative Hill sat on the Terrorism Subcommittee and the Military Readiness Subcommittee.

Elected in 1998, Representative Hill was a fiscal and budgetary leader in Congress, where, in his third term, his colleagues elected him as Communications Co-Chair for the Blue Dog Coalition, a group of 38 moderate-to-conservative Democrats who offer common-sense solutions and strongly advocate fiscal discipline. He was also an active member of the New Democrat Coalition, a group of moderate Democrats who focus on economic issues such as promoting a high-tech economy and job growth.

In January of 2002, Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD), appointed Representative Hill as one of seven Chief Deputy Whips, making him one of the highest ranking moderate Democrats in Congress. He served as a middle-of-the-road voice, bringing moderate and conservative views within the Democratic Caucus to the leadership table. He authored the Smaller Schools, Stronger Communities Act, which was signed into law as part of H.R. 1, President Bush's education reform bill.

Representative Hill's background includes running insurance and real estate businesses and serving in the Indiana General Assembly and on the Indiana State Student Assistance Commission. In 1982, he was elected to the Indiana House of Representatives, where he served for eight years. Representative Hill left the Indiana legislature in 1990 to run for a seat in the U.S. Senate, narrowly missing an upset victory. He also worked as a financial analyst for Merril Lynch. Born and raised in Seymour, Indiana, Representative Hill received a BA in history from Furman University.
